How to sideload apps on your CommBox Classic S4
Learn how to manually install (sideload) Android apps onto your CommBox Classic S4 using a USB drive—perfect for apps not available in the CommBox Store.

CommBox recommends consulting your IT administrator before sideloading any app.
Step-by-Step Instructions
What You’ll Need

A USB stick

The APK file (Android app installer) saved to the USB

Access to the CommBox’s Settings menu

The administrator PIN (if required)
- If your screen is on Dingo or Flying Fox Firmware (firmware dated from August/September 2024 onwards) than you will also need a one-time secure code from CommBox to re-enable side loading of applications. CommBox will only provide this PIN if you accept the Cyber Security liability for allowing users to side load applications. Request the PIN by logging a support ticket.
Step 1. Download the APK File
On your computer:

Download the APK file from a trusted source (e.g. official app website). Use a virus scan tool like VirusTotal to scan the file.

Copy the file to the root directory of your USB drive (not inside a folder).
💡 Tip: The official site of the app are safer options than unknown sources.
Step 2. Plug the USB into the CommBox
Insert the USB into a front or rear USB port on the CommBox Classic S4.
Step 3. Go to the Settings App
Go to Settings > Security >App Install and toggle on "Install Unknown Apps". A PIN prompt will appear. Enter the PIN provided by CommBox.
Step 4. Open the ‘Files’ App

Tap the side menu handle to open the launcher.

Select Files.

Navigate to the USB drive and find your APK file.
Step 5. Install the APK File

Tap the APK file.

Continue the installation and tap Install.
Step 6. Open Your App

Once installed, you’ll see an App Installed message.

Tap Open or find the app later via the Launcher > Apps section.
Troubleshooting / What to Do If It Doesn’t Work

"Can’t open file" message?
Ensure the file ends in.apk
and isn’t zipped. -
Unknown Sources blocked?
You must enable this the first time you install an APK. -
App crashes or won't open?
The app may not be compatible with Android 11 or the CommBox hardware. -
No ‘Install’ button showing?
This may be a resolution issue—try rotating the screen or using a mouse. -
Blocked by PIN or settings?
Ask your IT team for the admin PIN or check the Lock settings.
