How to import a class list into Spinner and Rewards on the CommBox Classic S5

You can now import a CSV file of student names into the Spinner and Rewards apps — no more typing names one by one at the start of each class.

CommBox Classic S5 — All models (Goanna firmware and above)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare your CSV file

  • On your computer, create a plain text file with one student name per line, for example:
    • Emma Brown
    • Liam Chen
    • Sophia Nguyen
  • Save the file with a .csv extension, for example Year3B.csv.
  • Copy it to a USB drive.

💡 Tip: Most school learning management systems (Canvas, Google Classroom, Compass, Sentral) let you export a class roll as a CSV. Download it, copy it to a USB drive and you are ready to import.

Step 2: Connect your USB drive

  • Plug the USB drive into one of the USB ports on the front or side of the Classic S5.

Step 3: Open Spinner or Rewards

  • From the home screen or Launcher, tap Spinner or Rewards.

Step 4: Open the import option

  • Tap the settings or menu icon inside the app.
  • Select Import from CSV.

Step 5: Navigate to your file and import

  • A file browser will open.
  • Navigate to your USB drive and select your CSV file.
  • Tap Confirm or Import to load the names into the app.

💡 Tip: Save your CSV file to the CommBox's internal storage (via Files) at the start of term so you do not need the USB drive every time. You can re-import the same file from internal storage whenever you need to reset the list.

Troubleshooting / What to Do If It Doesn't Work

  • CSV file is not appearing in the file browser — confirm the USB drive is connected. Open the Files app from the Launcher to check the drive is being detected.
  • Names are not displaying correctly after import — check the file is saved as plain UTF-8 text with one name per line and no extra columns, symbols or formatting.
  • Import from CSV option is not visible — open the CommBox Store and update the Spinner and Rewards apps to the latest version.
