How to connect external speakers or audio equipment to your CommBox Intelligent Display Gen 2

Learn how to connect external speakers, a sound system, or stereo equipment to your CommBox Intelligent Display Gen 2 for better sound in your classroom or meeting room.

Applies To:

CommBox Intelligent Display Gen 2 — All sizes (43", 55", 65", 75", 86", 98")

Step 1: Choose your audio connection type The CommBox Intelligent Display Gen 2 has two audio output options:

  • AUDIO OUT — a standard 3.5mm audio jack for connecting to a power amplifier, stereo system, or external speakers with a standard audio cable.
  • SPDIF — an optical audio output that carries high-quality multichannel sound. This is used with home theatre receivers or premium sound equipment that supports optical input.

For most classrooms, the AUDIO OUT port is the easiest option.

Step 2: Connect the audio cable Plug one end of your audio cable into the AUDIO OUT port on the back of the CommBox Intelligent Display Gen 2. Plug the other end into the input port on your external speaker or amplifier.

💡 Tip: If your speakers have a 3.5mm input, you will need a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cable. If your amplifier uses RCA inputs (the red and white plugs), you will need a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable. Both are inexpensive and available at most electronics stores.

Step 3: Turn on the display and your external speakers Power on the CommBox Intelligent Display Gen 2 and your external audio equipment. Adjust the volume using the VOL+ / VOL– buttons on the remote control or front of the display.

Step 4: (Optional) Connect via SPDIF If your audio equipment supports optical input, plug an optical (TOSLINK) cable into the SPDIF port on the back of the display and the optical input port on your receiver. Switch your receiver to the correct optical input.

Troubleshooting / What to Do If It Doesn't Work

  • No sound from external speakers — check that the audio cable is firmly plugged into the AUDIO OUT port and into your speakers or amplifier. Make sure the display is not muted.
  • Only one speaker has sound — adjust the sound balance in the display's menu settings. If using a computer, check that the computer's sound settings are not set to mono output.
  • Low sound quality — make sure the cable is undamaged and fully inserted. For better audio quality, consider using the SPDIF optical connection if your equipment supports it.
  • HDMI output has no sound — check that an external audio device is connected and that the correct audio output is selected in the settings.
