Why your CommBox S4 or S5 screen might turn off automatically
Understand the common reasons your CommBox screen may shut down on its own, and how to check or adjust these settings to keep your screen running as expected.
Applies to: CommBox Classic S4 &S4+, CommBox Classic S5
Step 1: Check for Scheduled Power Off
Open the swipe-up device menu.
Go to Power > Schedule power on/off.
Look for any active schedules that may be turning the screen off at specific times.
💡 Tip: Disable or adjust the schedule to suit your school or business hours.
Step 2: Check for Android Power Save Settings
Open the swipe-up device menu.
Go to Power > Android power save.
Check if Android Power Save is enabled with "Power Off " or "Backlight Off"
✅ These settings help reduce power use but can turn off the screen unexpectedly if idle.
Step 3: Confirm ‘No Signal’ Power Off Setting
Open the swipe-up device menu.
Navigate to Power > No Signal Power Save.
If this is enabled, the screen will power off after a set time without an active input.
📝 Connect a device or disable this setting to prevent shutdowns when removing an input source. You can set this option to "Switch to Android" if you want the CommBox to remain in a powered on state
Step 4: Check RS232 or IP Control Commands
If your screen is connected to a room control system (e.g. via RS232 or network), it may be receiving a shutdown command.
-
Contact your IT/AV team to review any automation or control scripts.
-
Disable RS232/IP control temporarily to test if the issue stops.
🔌 Common in classrooms and boardrooms using centralised AV control.
Step 5: Check for Motion Sensor (Body Detection) with the CommBox Sensor Box
If a sensor box is installed (usually mounted near the front inputs of the panel), it may turn the screen off if no movement is detected after a period.
-
The sensor may be configured to reduce power consumption when no one is in the room.
- You can disable the sensor box sleep after inactivity in the Swipe up > Power Tab
Step 6: Slot-in-PC (OPS) Shutdown
If you're using an OPS (Slot-in PC), shutting down the PC can cause the screen to turn off.
-
Ensure the screen is set to stay on even if the OPS shuts down.
-
Go to Swipe Up Menu > Power > On PC Shutdown and check input preferences.
💻 Also check Windows power settings on the OPS to prevent it going to sleep.
Step 7: Sleep Mode
The screen may be in sleep mode, not actually off.
-
Press the power button on the screen or remote to wake it.
-
Look for a pulsing red and white light on the power LED – this indicates Sleep Mode.
🌙 If the light is solid red, it’s on standby. If it’s off completely, the power switch may be off.
Step 8: Check HDMI-CEC Settings
If a connected device supports HDMI-CEC, it might be sending a shutdown signal to the screen.
-
Open Swipe Up Menu > Other > HDMI CEC
-
Disable this feature if you're not using HDMI-CEC to control the screen.
📺 CEC is a handy feature, but it can also trigger shutdowns when devices like when Apple TVs are turned off.
Troubleshooting / What to Do If It Doesn’t Work
-
The screen turns off even after all settings are reviewed:
-
Perform a factory reset (take a photo of the current settings if you want to replicate them)
-
Update firmware if an update is available
-
Contact CommBox Support if the issue persists
- Log a ticket via the CommBox Support Portal
