How to Update Firmware on Classic S4 and S4+
Upgrading the firmware of your S4 device ensures you have the latest features, improvements, and security updates. Follow these steps to successfully upgrade your S4 and S4+ firmware to the latest version.
How to Update
There are three ways to update the firmware on the Classic S4.
1. Via CommBox Manage - refer to the instructions here
2. Via the CommBox Over The Air (OTA) Server, outlined below.
3. Via a USB file update for screens not connected to the Internet. See below for more details on this method.
Update via the OTA Update Method
This is the preferred method because it will update your existing screen apps and configuration.
Step 1: Enter Settings
- From the Home screen, click on the side arrow to open up the menu.
- Select the Settings application.
Step 2: Access System Settings
- Within the Settings menu, click the 5th icon down labeled System.
- In the System menu, select System Upgrade.
Step 3: Check for Updates
- Within System Upgrade, you should see a prompt to download version 202405291157 "Dingo Release 65 2.75 RC3.1".
- If you do not see this prompt, select Check for upgrade.
Step 4: Ensure Sufficient Storage and Power
- Ensure your device has at least 2GB of free storage space.
- Make sure the device remains powered during the update process to avoid any interruptions.
Step 5: Download and Install the Update
- Once the update is available, you will see a progress bar indicating that the update has begun downloading.
The system will automatically install the update once the download is complete. Your device may restart several times during the process. Ensure the device remains powered until the update process is fully completed.
Congratulations! Your S4 firmware is now up to date with the latest version.
Step 6: Update the CommBox OS via the CommBox Store and Ensure that Silent App Install is On
- Once the update is complete, navigate to the CommBox Store. You will be prompted for a store update; select Update now.
- Before selecting Update, navigate to Settings on the top right-hand side of your screen.
- Ensure that Silent App Install is turned on.
- Then select Update Now
Note: If you cannot see the upgrade package, please refer to our network document below and ensure that all ports required for "OTA Updates" (starting from page 71) are open.
Step 7: Check that all CommBox Tools are updated
1. Scroll to CommBox Tools in the CommBox Store. Check to see if any Tools have 'Update' on the blue bottom. If so, please update the Tools as well.
Update your firmware via a USB Update method
If your screen is unable to be connected to the Internet you need to update your firmware via a USB update. Note that this method is like a factory reset, the screen will be updated back to factory settings and all existing apps and configurations will be removed.
Here are the steps:
1. Submit a ticket via the CommBox Support Portal, requesting the firmware files. Please make sure you provide the correct serial number - click here
2. The CommBox support team will share a secure link to download the firmware. This link will expire within 7 days.
3. Download the firmware and un-zip the file. Copy the unzipped firmware onto the root drive of a USB stick.
4. Insert the USB stick into ideally the USB2.0 port on the side but the front ports can be used.
5. Turn off the screen at the power switch on the base of the screen.
6. Hold down the power button on the front, while holding it down, turn on the power switch on the base of the screen. Wait until the power light starts flashing on the front of the screen. Then take your finger off the power button.
7. The screen will update - to Updating the Firmware. Do not turn off the screen while it is updating. Allow the update to complete.
8. Once it has completed you will need to go through the Set Up Wizard again and re-configured your screen. This will include re-enabling CommBox OS Experience in the CommBox Exp app.
9. Please check the CommBox Store app for any update to CommBox OS apps that were shipped outside of the firmware update. Please update or install any CommBox OS tools or apps. This will ensure that your screen will function correctly.
Reminder: Firmware must always be kept up to date
As part of the CommBox Warranty Terms and Conditions, you must keep your firmware up to date to maintain the validity of your Warranty.
