How to update firmware of the Classic S5
Outlines the steps to update a Classic S5
How to Update
There are three ways to update the firmware on the Classic S5.
1. Via CommBox Manage - refer to the instructions here
2. Via the CommBox Over The Air (OTA) Server, outlined below.
3. Via a USB file update for screens not connected to the Internet. Please log a support ticket to request the firmware.
Updating the firmware via the OTA server method
Step One: Complete the Firmware Update
For latest Classic S5 firmware, Flying Fox, you’ll be prompted with a firmware update popup on the Screen. You can choose to:
-
Download in the background
-
Schedule it for later
-
Remind me later (you’ll be prompted again in 24 hours)
If you don’t see the popup, you can manually check for updates:
-
Go to Settings > System > System Update and tap Check for Updates.
-
You can also open the CommBox Store—a banner will appear at the top if an update is available.
Step Two: Update CommBox OS Bundle via the CommBox Store
- Once the update is complete, navigate to the CommBox Store. You will be prompted for a CommBox OS bundle update, select Update now.
- Before selecting Update, navigate to Settings on the top right-hand side of your screen.
- Ensure that Silent App Install is turned on.
- Then select Update Now
Note: If you cannot see the upgrade package, please refer to our network document below and ensure that all ports required for "OTA Updates" (starting from page 71) are open.
Step 3: Check that all CommBox Tools are updated
1. Scroll to CommBox Tools in the CommBox Store.
2. Check to see if any Tools have 'Update' on the blue bottom. If so, please update the Tools as well.
Updating the firmware via the USB update method
If your screen is unable to be connected to the Internet you need to update your firmware via a USB update. Note that this method is like a factory reset, the screen will be updated back to factory settings and all existing apps and configurations will be removed.
Here are the steps:
1. Submit a ticket via the CommBox Support Portal, requesting the firmware files. Please make sure you provide the correct serial number - click here
2. The CommBox support team will share a secure link to download the firmware. This link will expire within 7 days.
3. Download the firmware and un-zip the file. Copy the unzipped firmware onto the root drive of a USB stick.
4. Insert the USB stick into ideally the USB2.0 port on the side but the front ports can be used.
5. Turn off the screen at the power switch on the base of the screen.
6. Hold down the power button on the front, while holding it down, turn on the power switch on the base of the screen. Wait until the power light starts flashing on the front of the screen. Then take your finger off the power button.
7. The screen will update - to Updating the Firmware. Do not turn off the screen while it is updating. Allow the update to complete.
8. Once it has completed you will need to go through the Set Up Wizard again and re-configured your screen. This will include re-enabling CommBox OS Experience in the CommBox Exp app.
9. Please check the CommBox Store app for any update to CommBox OS apps that were shipped outside of the firmware update. Please update or install any CommBox OS tools or apps. This will ensure that your screen will function correctly.
Reminder: Firmware must always be kept up to date
As part of the CommBox Warranty Terms and Conditions, you must keep your firmware up to date to maintain the validity of your Warranty.
