How to update firmware of the Atom Interactive Screen

Outlines the steps to update an Atom Interactive Screen

There are two ways to update the firmware on the Atom.

1. Via the CommBox Over The Air (OTA) Server, outlined below.

2. Via a USB file update for screens not connected to the Internet. Please log a support ticket to request the firmware.

Updating the firmware via the OTA server

1. Open the Setting App and go to the About Menu

2. Select Update > - from the top of the menu list 

3. From System Update pages select - System network update. This will check if there is an update available

4. If there is no update available for the following screen will be displayed. When there is an update, select Update to download and install the update.

Note: If you cannot see the upgrade package, please refer to our network document below and ensure that all ports required for "OTA Updates" (starting from page 71) are open.

Update your firmware via a USB Update method

If your screen is unable to be connected to the Internet you need to update your firmware via a USB update. Note that this method is like a factory reset, the screen will be updated back to factory settings and all existing apps and configurations will be removed.

Here are the steps:

1. Submit a ticket via the CommBox Support Portal, requesting the firmware files. Please make sure you provide the correct serial number - click here

2. The CommBox support team will share a secure link to download the firmware. This link will expire within 7 days.

3. Download the firmware from the link provided

4. Extract the .zip file, and locate the file “aml_upgrade_package.img”

5. Use a USB drive that is

  • Formatted as FAT32
  • Less than 16gb in capacity
  • Has no other files or folder  

6. After extracting, copy the “aml_upgrade_package.img”” file to the root of your USB drive, this should be the only item on the USB drive.

7. After the copy is completed, plug USB drive into the USB 2.0 port at the rear of the device

8. Turn the power to the panel off at the switch next to the power port input

9. Hold down the power button on the front, while holding it down, turn on the power switch on the base of the screen. Wait until the "Updating indicator appears on the screen. Then take your finger off the power button.

10. The screen will display - "Updating the Firmware". Do not turn off the screen while it is updating. Allow the update to complete. 

11. Once it has completed you will need to go through the Set Up Wizard again and re-configure your screen.

12. Check the CommBox Store app for any update to CommBox OS apps that were shipped outside of the firmware update. Please update or install any CommBox OS tools or apps. This will ensure that your screen will function correctly. 

Reminder: Firmware must always be kept up to date
