Getting Started 3: Update your Firmware on the Classic S5
This article outlines how to check that you are on the latest firmware for the Classic S5 and how to update it.
Update your firmware via the Over The Air (OTA) method
Make sure your device is running the latest firmware to ensure you have the most up-to-date security patches and access to new features. The OTA method is recommended because it will update, not reset the screen back to factory settings.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll to the System menu and select System Update.
- Tap Check Update to see if any updates are available.
- Install and Download if there are
Note 1: If you cannot see the upgrade package, please refer to our network document below and ensure that all ports required for "OTA Updates" (starting from page 71) are open.

Note 2: if your screen is not connected to the Internet, it will not be able to ping the CommBox update server to see if there is an update. In this case please follow the steps below and update the firmware via a USB update.
Update your firmware via a USB Update method
If your screen is unable to be connected to the Internet you need to update your firmware via a USB update. Note that this method is like a factory reset, the screen will be updated back to factory settings and all existing apps and configurations will be removed.
Here are the steps:
1. Submit a ticket via the CommBox Support Portal, requesting the firmware files. Please make sure you provide the correct serial number - click here
2. The CommBox support team will share a secure link to download the firmware. This link will expire within 7 days.
3. Download the firmware and un-zip the file. Copy the unzipped firmware onto the root drive of a USB stick.
4. Insert the USB stick into ideally the USB2.0 port on the side but the front ports can be used.
5. Turn off the screen at the power switch on the base of the screen.
6. Hold down the power button on the front, while holding it down, turn on the power switch on the base of the screen. Wait until the power light starts flashing on the front of the screen. Then take your finger off the power button.
7. The screen will update - to Updating the Firmware. Do not turn off the screen while it is updating. Allow the update to complete.
8. Once it has completed you will need to go through the Set Up Wizard again and re-configured your screen. This will include re-enabling CommBox OS Experience in the CommBox Exp app.
9. Please check the CommBox Store app for any update to CommBox OS apps that were shipped outside of the firmware update. Please update or install any CommBox OS tools or apps. This will ensure that your screen will function correctly.
Reminder: Firmware must always be kept up to date
As part of the CommBox Warranty Terms and Conditions, you must keep your firmware up to date to maintain the validity of your Warranty.
